Installation Designer

Summary: To produce designs for exhibitions and gallery installations that enhance the visual display and interpretation of art on view at the Saint Louis Art Museum.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assists in the production of designs for the display of temporary exhibitions, gallery rotations, permanent galleries and reinstallation of collections in consultation with the curators, conservators, registrar, exhibition dept. and other staff to achieve an appropriate, aesthetic, safe, and informative presentation of works of art on display at the Saint Louis Art Museum.
    1. Design work includes:
      1. Floor plans and elevations
      2. Exhibition casework and furniture
      3. Architectural elements
      4. Construction drawings
  2. Prepares space configuration and build-out options, designs casework, exhibition furniture and architectural elements; selects materials and finishes, and produces construction drawings, to include:
    1. Works with the curatorial staff on the placement of objects to ensure a thoughtful layout and that all works fit within designated gallery spaces
    2. follows conservation guidelines on approved materials for casework and provides casework drawings for their approval
    3. incorporates ADA guidelines in planning designs
    4. prepares detailed drawings for cabinetmakers
  3. Participates in production team and other project related meetings, for the review of exhibition plans and layouts with key departments involved.
  4. Designs and manages miscellaneous projects related to the collection and facility as directed.

Qualifications: Experience in museum exhibition design or applicable related field preferred or educational equivalent. Must have knowledge of AutoCAD, with minimum of 3 years drafting experience with CAD software or educational equivalent. Must be able to produce bid quality drawings. Must have time and budget management skills and be detail oriented in managing both. Must have strong communication and management skills to motivate, collaborate and complete work collaborating through others. Office computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel required. Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite and SketchUp are required. Project management experience is a significant plus.

Additional Details:

Hiring Range: $27.47 - $33.65 per hour

Status: Full-time (37.5 hours/week)
