Meet Managing Partner, Edward T. Hempstead
Ed began his career with Northwestern Mutual in 1963, while completing his B.A. in Psychology from St. Louis University, as a participant in the company’s esteemed college intern program.
After recruiting and training several agents, Ed opened a District Agency office in Clayton in August 1971 and built the agency to be ranked among the Top Twenty District Agencies nationwide in 1986. During this time Ed also completed his MBA, majoring in Finance. Because of his highly regarded management skills, Ed was appointed General Agent in January 1990.
Industry honors awarded to Ed include the designation of Chartered Life Underwriter, Qualifying Member of the Million Dollar Round Table (32 years since 1969), National Sales Achievement Award (17 years since 1968), and National Quality Award (26 years since 1966).
Most recently, Ed was awarded the 2001 "Most Exceptional Volunteer" by the Northwestern Mutual Foundation for his work with Cardinal Glennon Children´s Hospital. Read the 2001 story about this event:
"The kids need it. Let's do it."
According to Jim Orsund, executive vice president of Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital in St. Louis, this phrase has been a repeated call to action expressed by Edward Hempstead, CLU, general agent, and this year's "Most Exceptional Volunteer."
As such, he will receive a $25,000 grant in his honor from the Northwestern Mutual Foundation to present to the hospital. Hempstead first became involved with Cardinal Glennon when his then 6-month-old daughter, Amy, needed emergency treatment. "When I saw the care they gave Amy and the other kids there, I was very impressed," he explained. "A few years later, they asked if I would help raise money, and I said 'yes.'"
At that time, there was no fundraising group for the hospital, so Hempstead went to work. In 14 years of association with Cardinal Glennon, his achievements include: co-establishing its development board (its first official fundraising arm); serving as president of the board of governors for four years, during which annual gifts grew from $17,000 to $600,000; recruiting well-known figures like Hall of Fame football player Dan Dierdorf, NBC sportscaster Bob Costas, and National Hockey League MVP Chris Pronger to leadership positions and fundraising initiatives; and creating a board for training young men and women as the next generation of volunteer leadership.
Results of these efforts include a multimillion dollar expansion of the hospital's Emergency and Trauma Services; ongoing events that have raised millions of dollars for its hematology/oncology program; and development of the St. Louis Cord Blood Bank, the world's second largest program of its type.
The end result of Hempstead's efforts, according to Orsund, is that "Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital, one of the largest pediatric hospitals in the United States, is still, in this turbulent healthcare environment, able to provide its patients state-of-the-art care, without regard to their family's financial circumstances."
Orsund added, "In my 30 years of experience with several organizations throughout the United States, I can honestly say that Ed Hempstead exemplifies the definition of the word volunteer."
When asked what it means to him to win the 2001 Most Exceptional Volunteer award, Hempstead said simply, "that the hospital will get $25,000, helping it continue to make a difference in children's lives."

Career Insights
Read what some of the members of The Hempstead Group have to say about their careers:
Gerard M Hempstead, CPA, CLU, ChFC
Managing Director
I was a Certified Public Accountant with KPMG on the audit side in their insurance and financial services practice. While that was a great background, I’ve always wanted to work for myself, have a tremendous impact on people’s lives, and make a significant living. Northwestern Mutual presented this opportunity to me as a Financial Representative.
The greatest reward of being a Financial Representative is the relationships I have with my clients and prospects. I literally change lives for the better on a daily basis! I appreciate this great responsibility to serve my clients as well as the freedom and flexibility this career affords me to spend time with my family and provide an outstanding lifestyle for them.
The Career’s Challenges
The greatest challenge of being a Financial Representative is keeping up with the constant opportunities to grow personally and professionally that present themselves to me on a daily basis.
The biggest challenge in the first few years is keeping the confidence in yourself and in the client building system. You need to be ‘on’ all the time – constantly prospecting and introducing yourself and your services to 300 new people in your first year, 250 new people in your second year and 200 new people every year thereafter to build a rock solid client base that you can grow with.
But along the way, I’ve learned that I can achieve anything I set my mind on achieving.
Michelle Barber, Financial Representative
I was an office manager for a property/casualty company representative for over eight years. I was the representative in everything but the name on the door. My representative had told me that I would be a good representative one day, but needed to complete college.
I started back to college when my children were one and two. From there, I decided that I wanted the flexibility of a representative in order to attend my children’s school functions, plus I wanted to help people, especially women, understand life insurance and how important it is for the future.
Words of Wisdom
If you choose this as a career, make sure you have a good support system at home. Without someone in the background supporting you, rooting you on, challenging you, motivating you, helping you up when you are down, you don’t stand a chance at making this career work.
This is a very rewarding career if you work hard and play by the rules already set forth and proven to work. Don’t try to reinvent a new technique that you think will work better—it won’t!
Internships
Whether you know where your college education is taking you or you _ re still keeping your options open, you owe it to yourself to see if Northwestern Mutual Financial Network's Internship program with The Hempstead Group is right for you.
As you learn by doing, you'll find that the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network Internship Program is an intense and according to our alumni -- unparalleled learning experience. Expect the process to be rewarding, educational and an opportunity for you to narrow your career search.
Our internships provide a great chance for students to combine what they've learned in the classroom with a real-life look into what they could truly make of themselves. You'll have the chance to work in a real-world business environment and earn performance-based compensation.
The ambition of the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network Internship program has been less to sell our financial products than to develop people. As a Financial Representative College Intern, you will enjoy the benefit of working with The Hempstead Group where you'll receive outstanding guidance, superior support and quality expertise.
As full-time college students, interns generally work 15 to 20 hours per week developing business- and client-building skills. In most ways, our interns follow the same process for establishing their careers as our Financial Representatives.
Our internship offers you invaluable business experience that you will take with you far into your career. But that's just the start of the impact this can have on your future and your present.
Consider these benefits:
Practical guidance in your career selection process
The chance to develop your networking and business relationship skills
Flexible work schedule
Securities license, state licenses for life, health and accident insurance opportunities and a head start program for a career as a full-time Financial Representative
Compensation in the same manner as a full-time Financial Representative.
Actual business experience for your resume.
Test drive the Financial Representative career.
Regardless of what you do after graduation, you'll have a foundation of skills and knowledge to build your career upon. One out of three former interns becomes a full-time Financial Representative upon graduation. These graduates have built a solid foundation for immediate and future career success.
The two-thirds who choose other career paths benefit as well. They launch their career with stronger business-building skills and a clearer sense of where they want their career to take them.
After completing the internship, the knowledge you have gained, coupled with the opportunity to work for The Hempstead Group as a full-time Financial Representative, can lead you to a profitable and fulfilling future.
